What "the Trinity B1 test" is

Trinity College London sells several English exams. The one people mean when they say "Trinity B1 test" is GESE Grade 5, sold as a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK Visas and Immigration. GESE stands for Graded Examinations in Spoken English. Grade 5 is the grade Trinity maps to CEFR B1, and the Home Office accepts it for:

  • settlement (indefinite leave to remain), for applications before 26 March 2027 on every route, and after that date on the BN(O), HM Armed Forces and Domestic Worker in a Private Household routes
  • British citizenship (naturalisation), unchanged by the 2027 rules

Trinity also sells ISE I, a four-skills B1 exam with reading and writing. Nobody needs ISE I for settlement or citizenship, which test speaking and listening only. If a booking site offers you "Trinity B1" at two prices, the cheaper one is the ten-minute GESE Grade 5 and that is the one you want.

Ten minutes, two phases, one examiner

GESE Grade 5
Length 10 minutes
Phase 1: Topic about 5 minutes on a subject you chose and prepared on a Topic Form
Phase 2: Conversation about 5 minutes on two of six set subjects chosen by the examiner
Who marks it a Trinity examiner, live
Where one of Trinity's 20-plus UK SELT centres, seven days a week
How on a Trinity tablet set up by a steward at the centre; the examiner joins by video
Result provisional result by email by 9am the next day; digital certificate link in 4 to 7 days
Price £160; Exam Protect (one retake and one reschedule) £35 more

The six Conversation subjects at Grade 5 are festivals, means of transport, special occasions, entertainment, music, and recent personal experiences. Each has its own page under the Grade 5 subjects.

The Topic phase is the half candidates underestimate. You write four to six points on a Topic Form at home, bring it, and talk with the examiner about them. You must ask the examiner at least one question about your topic; forgetting it is the single most common reason for a lower grade. The Topic Form page has the rules and eight finished forms.

Trinity suits people who talk better than they type and who want to steer half the exam towards a subject they know. It does not suit people who freeze with a stranger, or who want zero preparation: the Topic Form is work. IELTS Life Skills, LanguageCert and PTE Home each have a page here.

Booking the Trinity B1 test, step by step

  1. Go to trinitycollege.com and open SELT, then "B1 GESE Grade 5". Book on Trinity's own site. GOV.UK warns against third parties who charge more than the provider's price or claim a Home Office link they do not have.
  2. Pick a centre and a slot. Trinity lists more than 20 UK centres and runs exams seven days a week, so most people find a date within two weeks.
  3. Enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport or travel document. If your surname changed, book in the passport name or change the passport first. A mismatch on the day means no exam and no refund.
  4. Pay £160, plus £35 if you want Exam Protect. There is no refund for a fail without it.
  5. Download the Topic Form, fill it in and print it. Bring it with your ID. Without the form you cannot do the Topic phase and cannot pass.

GOV.UK says you should be able to sit a SELT within 28 days of booking, though not always at the nearest centre.

What to bring

Your original identity document: passport, travel document, or for tests in the UK your eVisa share code. An expired BRP or BRC still works until 24 months after the expiry date on the card or 31 December 2026, whichever comes first. Then the Topic Form. Nothing else is allowed in the exam except pictures or objects that help you talk about your topic.

After the exam

The provisional result arrives by 9am the next day. The digital certificate carries your UER, the reference number GOV.UK asks for in a settlement or citizenship application. The Home Office checks it on Trinity's verification system; you do not post the certificate. For a new application the test must have been taken in the two years before you apply. For how old passes are reused, see how long a B1 is valid.

Before you pay £160

Trinity publishes the subjects and the grammar it expects at Grade 5: present perfect for experiences, going to and will for plans, comparatives, "because" with reasons, and a question back to the examiner. A candidate who answers in two or three sentences with a reason, uses the past and the present perfect without being pushed, and asks a question, passes. One-word answers fail even with perfect grammar. The free practice on this site runs the Grade 5 Conversation subjects with an AI examiner and grades you on Trinity's scale, so you know which group you are in before you book.
