B1 · Trinity GESE Grade 5

Practise your B1 speaking test with an AI examiner

The ten-minute Grade 5 exam for British citizenship and settlement: your Topic Form, then two conversation subjects, marked A to D with reasons.

  • The same two phases and six subjects as the real exam
  • A graded report straight after, with your sentences corrected
  • On your phone, any time. 4 minutes free, no card

Settling after 26 March 2027 on the partner or work route? You need B2: the Grade 7 practice is here.

Trinity GESE Grade 5 format. Topic phase and Conversation phase, about five minutes each.

Marked on Trinity’s own criteria. Communication, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation.

Voice processed in the EU. Microsoft Azure. Audio is not stored.

B1 is still the level for citizenship, and for settlement before 26 March 2027

Naturalisation stays at B1 whatever happens in 2027. Settlement needs B1 until 26 March 2027 on every route, and after that on the BN(O), Armed Forces and Domestic Worker routes. The test is speaking and listening only, £160 an attempt at Trinity.

Check which level you need

How it works

1

Pick a subject

One of the six Grade 5 conversation subjects, or bring your Topic Form for the full mock.

2

Talk with the examiner

They greet you, ask, listen and follow up, like in the room. Ask them to repeat if you need to; that is allowed in the real exam too.

3

Get your grade

A to D for the phase and for each of the four criteria, your sentences corrected, and the one thing to fix first.

The exam: 10 minutes, two phases

Trinity GESE Grade 5. The Conversation phase is free to practise now; the full mock runs both phases in one sitting, timed, with a letter for each phase and Trinity’s overall result. Your first full mock is free.

Questions

Who needs B1 rather than B2?

Everyone applying for British citizenship: naturalisation stays at B1 and HC 1691 does not change it. Everyone applying for settlement before 26 March 2027, on any route. After that date, settlement on the BN(O), Armed Forces and Domestic Worker routes stays at B1; the partner route and most work routes move to B2. Not sure? The B1-or-B2 check takes a minute.

Which exam is this?

Trinity GESE Grade 5, the Secure English Language Test most people take for B1 speaking and listening. Ten minutes, one examiner, two phases: your prepared topic, then a conversation on two of six subjects. If you are taking the four-skills ISE I instead (some work and student visas), the speaking part is different and this mock is only a partial rehearsal.

There are free B1 mock apps. Why pay here?

You do not have to. The conversation practice is free every day, and your first full ten-minute mock, Topic Form and all, is free with an account. What a pack buys is more full mocks: 10 timed sittings with a Trinity-style letter for each phase, the two-phase result the way Trinity combines it, the sentences you said next to the ones a B1 speaker says, and a PDF you can show a teacher. The same pack also works for B2 if your plans change.

Do I need a Topic Form?

Yes, in the real exam and here. Five points about a subject you know well, not one of the six conversation subjects, written in your own words. The examiner asks about at least four of your points, in any order, and you must ask the examiner one question about your topic. Our examiner does the same.

How accurate is the grade?

It is an estimate of how a Trinity examiner would mark that performance, built on the published Grade 5 descriptors and language list: present perfect, will for the future, preferences with reasons, for and since, quantifiers. A is distinction, B merit, C pass, D fail; two Ds across the two phases fail the exam, one D does not. A real examiner on a real day can differ.

What happens to my voice?

The examiner is an AI speech model on Microsoft Azure in the EU. Your voice is streamed to it and turned into text; we do not store the audio. We keep the transcript and the report so you can come back to them. Nobody trains a model on your conversations.
